The Glorious War Inside Our Body
Our immune system works wonders to serve as our body’s natural self defense for injury, stress, and lots of disease-causing agents. It’s designed to combat against the plethora of bacteria, viruses, fungi, toxins, and parasites that try to harm and wear us down. Perhaps we can clearly understand the magic it does when we compare our living selves to something that dies. It rots in the most unpleasant way we can imagine and most of the time, stinks.
This process is called decomposition and it starts when the body’s immune system shuts down, which then allows a host of microorganisms to consume what’s left in the body. But when the immune system works perfectly these microorganisms may be successful at forcing an entry but wouldn’t survive the callousness of the different components of the system. After all, they would have battled hard enough even at the point of physical barrier such as the skin and mucuosa.

But the story becomes different once they get inside our body because that’s when they meet circulatory white blood cells which engulf and destroy them or the interferons for the viruses that allows them to attach so they would be sent to the headquarters and send signals of invasion. At this point, it becomes more ugly and at the same time suspenseful because the war for survival of the fittest begins.
When it starts, lymphocytes in the form of B and T lymphocytes carry out specific functions. The former acts like an intelligence team that tags and secure the targets, while the latter destroys the identified invaders. B lymphocytes also serve as the memory of the team and are important for production of antibodies. These antibodies can remember which is which and trigger a more rapid backup once an invasion happens again.
There still a lot of components like the complementary system, inflammatory cells, natural killer cells, and whatnot. The ones mentioned above and these other components are all important in enabling a human being to survive; without one, health catastrophe may ensue. So it’s very important that this body’s self defense is well taken care of, fortified, and enhanced through a balanced lifestyle of nutritious food intake, good sleep, enough exercise, and positive thinking.
